Well, we hope you local folks at least recognize the car in
the above picture-it is our regular line patrol car for the STAR
Team. Each officer is assigned his own car and is responsible
for it and all the equipment that goes with it. And, that beast
on the right is our beloved BATMOBILE. No, we are not kidding
- we really do have a vehicle in our fleet called
the Batmobile! Now, we get a lot of folks asking us exactly
what is this vehicle and why do we call it that. So, here is
the scoop: The purpose of this vehicle is to allow for on the
spot roadside breath alcohol testing using the official State
of Georgia testing device, the Intoxilzer 5000 machine. It also
has facilities for the holding and transporting those persons
which have been arrested. This expedites the arrest procedure
and frees up the officers to do other tasks.
Now, for the name: the "BAT" part is an
acronym for Blood Alcohol Testing, and the "mobile"
means the ability to travel. And, of course, it also is similar
to the vehicle in the superhero comics and TV show, in which
a vehicle with a lot of gadgets/hi-tech equipment inside.
We have six (6) patrol cars in our unit. They are 1994, 1995 and 1996 Ford Crown Victorias. Each car has distinctive markings compared to the other vehicles in the department. Each car is equipped with video camera and audio, radar, and Whelen Comet-strobe emergency lighting.
